How clinicians think about GLP-1 eligibility
For medically supervised weight management, clinicians generally start with body mass index (BMI) — your weight relative to your height — alongside your medical history. The widely used thresholds are a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher when paired with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea.
- Below 18.5Underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9Healthy range
- 25.0 – 26.9Overweight
- 27.0 – 29.9Overweight (threshold with a condition)
- 30.0 and aboveObesity (general threshold)
BMI is a useful starting screen, but it doesn't capture everything — muscle mass, body composition, and individual health history all matter. That's why a final decision is always made by a licensed clinician who reviews your full intake, not by a calculator.
This tool is for general education only and is not medical advice, a diagnosis, or a determination of eligibility. BMI is one screening input among many. Whether a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for you is decided by a licensed clinician after reviewing your complete medical history, labs, and contraindications. Compounded medications are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality before being marketed. If you have questions about your health, talk with a qualified healthcare provider.
